The federal Workforce Investment Act (WIA) was signed into law by President Clinton in 1998. WIA provides a comprehensive range of workforce development activities through statewide and local organizations to benefit job seekers, laid off workers, youth, incumbent workers, veterans, persons with disabilities, and employers.
The purpose of the WIA program is to promote an increase in the job placement, job retention, earnings, and occupational skills improvement by participants, thus increasing the quality of the workforce and reducing welfare dependency. San Mateo County will receive approximately 3 million dollars from the State government this year to provide services for adults, laid-off workers, and youth.
The information in this area is designed for providers or contractors that provide Workforce Investment Act services.
