Need to know more?  Giving Blood saves lives and makes a difference in the most personal and profound ways. 

In order to donate blood, you must meet national eligibility guidelines.

  • Certain health conditions may prevent you from donating blood or may  require you to wait before donating blood. Refer to the complete Donation Eligibility Guidelines.
  • If you are taking certain supplements, over the counter or prescribed  medications, you may not be able to donate blood right now. Refer to the complete Medications Deferral List.
  • Travel to certain countries may temporarily restrict you from donating blood.  Please call 1-888-393-GIVE to learn more.
  • You can donate blood once every eight weeks (56 days).

 

Schedule your appointment, Get Ready, GO! 

  • Make sure that you are currently eligible to donate blood: check the Donation Eligibility Guidelines, Medications list, and if you have traveled overseas within the past year, call the Travel line. 
  • Schedule your appointment online at https://www.bloodheroes.com ~ it’s quick AND easy! Use smcountyemployees as the sponsor code. You’ll be asked to provide your email address and birth date. 
  • Beginning one week prior to your appointment, try to add at least one more iron-rich food in your diet daily (unless your doctor indicates otherwise). Learn more by viewing the List of Iron-Rich Foods.
  • During the last 24-48 hours before your appointment, eat well-balanced, low- fat meals with plenty of fluids. Learn more by viewing the Food List.
  • Check in 5 minutes before your scheduled appointment. Learn  more about  What to Expect at your Appointment.
