Basic Short Term Disability
Eligible Employees
All probationary and regular full-time and part-time employees working 20 or more hours per week, who are not enrolled in State Disability Insurance (SDI). New employees enrolled in SDI may also enroll in the Basic Short Term Disability program for their first seven months on the job; after seven months, when SDI benefits become payable, the Basic coverage will be cancel.
Benefits
After a 14-day waiting period, benefits become payable if you are disabled by illness or injury that is not covered by Workers Compensation (i.e., not job-related). You must be under the regular care of a physician for the full time you are disabled, including the waiting period.
The Basic plan pays $95 per week after the 14-day waiting period. Benefits continue for a maximum of 18 weeks, and are paid in addition to any sick leave or other compensation.

Employees whose job classifications are represented by AFSCME, SEIU, CNA, Trades, Telecommunications, Physicians.
Coverage Begins
You must be enrolled and make contributions to SDI for seven months to be eligible to receive benefits for disability. If you want disability coverage during your first seven months, you may enroll in the Basic Short Term Disability plan for that period.
Benefits
Benefits are based on wages paid during a specific 12-month base period, which is determined by the date your claim begins. Weekly benefits range from $70 weekly to a maximum of $490 weekly based on wages paid in the highest quarter of your base period. To receive benefits, you must:
Important Note
If you have accrued sick leave, your SDI benefits will be integrated with your sick leave.
* This means that the combined amounts of your SDI payment and your County sick leave payment will not exceed your regular biweekly wage. Use of sick leave is mandatory, vacation or holiday time is at the employee's discretion.
In the event an SDI check is sent directly to the employee, it is the employee's responsibility to photostat the stub and mail the copy to the Controller's Office, attention Payroll Unit, SDI Desk. Failure to do so will result in an overpayment.
Claim forms and other information on SDI are available from your payroll clerk. Be sure to use the County claim forms, not a form supplied by your doctor or hospital.

LTD is available to permanent employees who have worked for the County for 3 years and at minimum of 20 hours per week.
