Basic Term Life Insurance
General Information
The County offers group term life insurance for all County employees. This insurance is paid entirely by the County.
Eligible Employees
All probationary and regular full-time and part-time employees working 20 or more hours per week.
Coverage Begins
The first day of the pay period starting after 28 days of employment.
Coverage Ends
Last day of pay period in which employment terminates.
Conversion Privilege
If you terminate employment with San Mateo County, you may convert your group coverage to individual coverage within 31 days after termination or retirement. You may contact the Employee and Public Services Department for the procedure to follow in converting your coverage.

Supplemental Life Insurance
General Information
In addition to the basic term life insurance provided by the County, you may purchase supplemental life in $10,000 increments from $50,000* to $250,000 for yourself and $25,000 to $125,000 for your spouse. You may also purchase $10,000 for your children if you have $50,000 for yourself. Dual coverage is not permitted under the policy. If you and your spouse are employed by the County, you may elect your own coverage or be covered as a dependent, but not both.
Supplemental life insurance is optional and fully paid by the employee, based upon salary.
*An Evidence of Insurability form must be filled out if you are eligible on the later of (a) the Group Policy Effective Date, and (b) the first day of the pay period following 28 consecutive days as a Member.
Required:
- For late application for Contributory insurance.
- For reinstatements if required.
- For Members and Dependents eligible but not insured for Contributory insurance under the Prior Plan.
- For any Life Insurance Benefit in excess of Guarantee Issue Amount of $50,000.
- For any Dependents Life Insurance Benefit for your Spouse in excess of Guarantee Issue Amount of $25, 000.
- For any increase in Life Insurance or Dependents Life Insurance Benefit due to a change in the amount selected.

Coverage Ends
The last day of a pay period in which employment terminates.

May convert to individual coverage in combination with the basic plan.
Disability Waiver
Premium payments may be waived after 6 months of disability.
Cost of Coverage
The cost of coverage is based on your age and the age of your spouse. A sampling of the costs is found here.
Additional Life Insurance
Accidental Death and Dismemberment
$10,000 additional benefits.
Family Death
$500 for spouse or for child 6 months to 21 years old. $100 for infant over 14 days old.
