Dental Plans  Printer Friendly View

The County of San Mateo offers two dental plans for employees. Dental coverage is mandatory for all regular and probationary employees. You must enroll in the plan of your choice within three days after your employment begins. Each year in October during the annual open enrollment period, you may change to the other plan or add new eligible dependents if you wish. Your share of the cost for dental coverage will be deducted from your paycheck each pay period. The current cost for dental coverage is shown on the rate chart enclosed in your benefits package.

One plan, the San Mateo County Self-funded Dental Plan (administered by Blue Shield) is an indemnity Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plan. It provides coverage for dental care from any dentist in any location. After you have received services from a dentist, a claim is filed and you are reimbursed by the plan. Selection of preferred provider dentist will save costs.

The other plan, the Delta PMI Plan, is a prepaid, managed dental care plan where only a few Delta Dental dentists have agreed to participate. Although you may have a Delta Dental dentist he/ she may not have agreed to participate in the managed dental care plan so it is important to confirm that your dentist is part of Delta PMI. As long as your dental care is provided by a Delta member-dentist, your expenses are covered in full in almost all cases. Exceptions, such as orthodontia, will require a CO-payment from you.
